Enrico Pianori when had his first hit record
                   "ZITTA NUN' ODDI."

ENRICO PIANORI was born in ROME as ENRICO GILDO PIANORI. After a difficult examination, he was accepted to the "Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia" in Rome, which is equal to "The Acting Studio" in New York City. While studying at the C.S C.(1956), ENRICO was performing as a theatre actor with a top Italian Production company called, "CAMILLO PILOTTO -LAURA CARLI" at the famous theater "ELISEO OF ROME." That same year after his music examination, he became a member of the SOCIETA' ITALIANA AUTORI EDITORI as a music composer and lyric-writer. During the year 1957 ENRICO received first place prize "LA VENERE D`ARGENTO," which is given to the youngest Italian composer of the year for his song "ZITTA NUN` ODDI`." In the same year "LA VENERE D`ARGENTO" was also given to VITTORIO GASMAN, VIRNA LISI, SHIUBERT, and others. The song, "ZITTA NUN’ ODDI`," was first recorded by TEDDY RENO (a famous singer),GLORIA CHRISTIAN, and finally by ENRICO PIANORI on RCA RECORDS and it became overnight a best seller in around Italy. During this time while receiving another prize at the hotel "CRISTALLINO" of Cortina D`ampezzo, ENRICO met the beautiful German actrice CHRISTINE KAUFMAN who made several films in Italy; one of those was with ALBERTO SORDI in the film "VACANZE D`INVERNO." CHRISTINE became ENRICO’s steady companion and they appeared in several magazines together. Four years later CHRISTINE KAUFMAN married an American actor TONY CURTIS, while they were shooting together a film in HOLLYWOOD, "TARAS BULBA"

One beautiful night in Rome ENRICO, CHRISTINE KAUFMAN, and ROBERTA STOPPA went to visit an old friend PEPPINO DI CAPRI, who was playing with his band at the "KIT KAT." When he sow ROBERTA, he went bananas. He asked ENRICO for her telephone number and two years later they were married!! Boys!! Boys!! During 1958--1961 ENRICO wrote and recorded numerous songs with R.C.A. Italiana. One of these songs, “CHIUDI GLI OCCHI,” was arranged by the grande maestro ENNIO MORRICONE; and, then, ENRICO received a special request from the Italian director PIERO VIVARELLI for his movie "IO BACIO TU BACI" -- the title of ENRICO’s song was "IL CHA CHA CHA DELL`IMPICCATO" and it became a big hit in Italy in 1959.

During this time ENRICO was performing in Rome at the famous roman night club named, "LE GROTTE DEL PICCIONE," alternating the stage with the very well know singer FRED BUSCAGLIONE -- one of the most favorite Italian singers and personalities. As usual, at the end of the night, BUSCAGLIONE was driving home with his girlfriend FATIMA ROBINS in his Thunderbird when suddenly he hit a cement pole, unfortunately, killing both FATIMA and himself instantly. It was a very sad time for all the Italian people; everybody loved him and continue love BUSCAGLIONE. Later in that same year EZIO RADAELLI, a great organizer, invented the "RALLY DEL-CINEMA." So, he called the most famous personalities, including ENRICO PIANORI and as ENRICO would say, “what a party my friend !!!!!! what a party!!!!” Every RALLY'S CAR had one famous couple and ENRICO got as a companion, for the entire RALLY (10 days), the French actrice CLOUDINE LOUNGET. She later married the singer ANDY WILLIAMS and she made several films with the actor PETER SELLER. At the end of the RALLY in Sicily ENRICO was so exhausted that he had to call his good friend ENNIO GIROLAMI to drive him home.

In subsequent years ENRICO was very successful. He wrote and recorded many songs for R.C.A. ITALIANA, DURIUM, PHILIPS, RALLY RECORDS, FONIT, and CAM. For many years ENRICO appeared in night clubs, theatres, and on television shows. In 1965 ENRICO organized a new band, and he hired LUCIO BATTISTI [at that time completely unknown] as his guitar player and during this period ENRICO, for the first time, started thinking about emigrating in United States.

After the pains of SAN REMO, ENRICO did some television shows and wrote some new songs; one was really unusual, "ARMANDO CACINI," a real famous roman character who advertised that he has always been the best at everything. The singer and famous talent-scout TEDDY RENO hears ENRICO’s song and thought that it was the perfect song for his wife, RITA PAVONE (at the time top record seller in Italy). ENRICO, (Teddy says to him) this song is going to be another big hit like yours famous "CHACHA DELL'IMPICCATO." I'm going to produce it; you can bet on it! Unfortunately, no matter how hard TEDDY RENO tried, the R.C.A. ITALIANA did not approve the production. After the disappointments of SAN REMO and the song "ARMANDO CACINI," Enrico was looking for new ways, but he didn't want to leave his beloved Country. Another summer, another song, Enrico participated at "UN DISCO PER L'ESTATE" with his song "OMBRE DELLA MIA STANZA." In the winter of 1966 the Italian television was preparing the famous show "STUDIO 1" with MINA when somebody called ENRICO on the phone: MR. PIANORI I need to meet you regarding the song ""QUANDO VERRA L'INVERNO." He told ENRICO that his song has been chosen for the opening of the television show "STUDIO 1." ENRICO said that during the meeting, the gentleman asked him to pay upfront a sum of lire 1,500,000 to be paid in cash, under the table.

That was the last drop in the bucket. ENRICO organized a new band and went to play in GREECE. "THE ATHINEA CLUB" in ATHENS was a very elegant and sophisticated club and the people loved ENRICO'S music. The contract was renewed three times and then came a new contract for "THESSALONICA," where ENRICO met his future wife SASA SOFOU`. During this period, ENRICO sang three times in national Greek television and recorded two 45 records in the Greek language for PHILIPS. Everything was going fantastic, but there was a problem; in GREECE the television doesn’t pay singers and since the recording companys where not controlled, the only money he was getting was from the clubs. It was just enough to pay for the hotels, the taxis, and the meals. Back in Athens ENRICO PIANORI and SASA SOPHOU got married and had a son on July 25th 1972. Together they decided to travel to the United States. It was the 25 of August 1968. After 2 months in NEW YORK, ENRICO had to have a surgery at the MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL for a very unusual tumor -- a "LAYIOMAIOMA" -- inside the stomach. He lost a large amount of blood and was very close to dying, but only after a week, stitches still fresh, he went back to sing at the French restaurant "L'ORANGERY."

After several cold months of New York, ENRICO AND SASA decided to go to Las Vegas, the capital of the entertainment. It was February and Vegas was warm and beautiful. After a little while in Vegas, Enrico was able to find his first work at the MINT HOTEL and his name was in large letters outside the building. Then came the hotel next door, THE FREMONT, and then the HOLIDAY INN, and then MGM, and then THE TROPICANA, and then THE INTERNATIONAL HILTON, and then CIRCUS CIRCUS, and then THE UNION PLAZA, and then THE DUNES, and then THE CAESAR'S PALACE -- all over LAS VEGAS.

Then, together ENRICO AND SASA worked in Los Angeles at the HOLIDAY INN in Hollywood, in CARSON CITY (Nevada) at the ORSBY HOUSE, and in LAS VEGAS at THE FRONTIER HOTEL, at the SILVER SLIPPER, and again at THE UNION PLAZA. Then ENRICO, already separated from SASA in 1982, moved to Miami, Florida; his first work was at the HOLIDAY INN on Colange Avenue for a 6 month contract; then, came the HOTEL MARCO POLO, then SHERATON HOTEL in BOCA RATON and others.

While working in Florida ENRICO received a call from San Diego; it was his friend REMO SCHIAVI offering a job at the PORTOFINO [The new Italian restaurant in Encinitas overlooking the ocean]. He make him a very good offer that he could not refuse. So he rented his condominium in DEL REY BEACH and moved to San Diego, California and on May 17, 1985 ENRICO started working at the PORTOFINO Italian restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not going very well, but by the first of JUNE every thing changed; 90% of the happy customers started to return and there was a line outside the door that kept getting longer and longer. Parked in front of the RESTAURANT any day of the week you could see FERRARI, MASERATI, MERCEDES, LAMBORGHINI etc. Famous people like ERNEST BORGNINE, SHOUMAKER, JULIO EGLESIA, and BROOKE SHIELD where dining regularly at the PORTOFINO. The RESTAURANT became one of the most successful restaurants in the San Diego area. And it was during this time that [after 15 years of silence] ENRICO decide to go back on the recording studio. Since ENRICO could sing in 5 different languages, he thought that a new album entitled ''INTERNATIONALLY YOURS'' would be a good idea for his next musical project. INTERNATIONALLY YOURS was sold on television in the San Diego area for 2 year and was phenomenal advertising for the PORTOFINO restaurant. Business was great; every single night was SOLD OUT. The owner ROMEO SCHIAVI raised ENRICO’s pay and everything was going beautiful. In 1988 the restaurant was at the top of its value and the owner saw the opportunity to sell it for a lot of money. The new owner, a lawyer from New York, did not want any music, so ENRICO said good-bye to the PORTOFINO and after 3 years of nonstop working, ENRICO took a need VACATION.

Mamma Gina's Summer 1988
The Night He Peformed for Frank Sinatra
After 4 weeks of vacation, ENRICO went to Palm Springs [July 1988] and got a job in the lounge of the famous Italian restaurant MAMMA GINA, located on El Passeo Drive of PALM DESERT. One night FRANK SINATRA, his wife BARBARA, his body guard Gillis, and 10 special guest came to eat at MAMMA GINA. Everything was prepared in the dining room, but when BARBARA saw ENRICO'S picture of him performing in the lounge, she said we are going to eat in the lounge; I want to hear my friend ENRICO singing . Previously, ENRICO sang for BARBARA at least 3 times before in other restaurants in Palm Springs. The owner of MAMMA GINA PIERO PIERATTONI, a famous restaurateur, in FLORENCE, TUSCANY went to ENRICO and said: please, ENRICO be careful of what your going to sing tonight; if FRANK SINATRA doesn't like you, we are all in trouble!!! And so he started telling about what happened 2 weeks ago at MAMMA GINA'S LOUNGE. At a certain point in the night, an old Irish tenor started singing ''WHEN THE IRISH EYES ARE SMILING,'' FRANK SINATRA came in and immediately said, “Please do me a favor, get out of here!! you cant' sing!!” The tenor said, “who you think you are??” FRANK replied, “I am a guy who knows about singing, believe me!!!...... Please, get out of here!!!!” ENRICO recalls this story often...

ENRICO reassured PIERO that he knows exactly what kind of music FRANK likes and that he would try his best to please FRANK. The lounge was emptied and cleaned and a long table for 12 people was set in front of ENRICO. BARBARA was the first to come in and headed straight to him... Hello, ENRICO how are you? I have FRANK with me; I told him how good you are. Everybody sat at the table and ENRICO started to sing very softly while they where talking and drinking cocktails. ENRICO knew that FRANK would love to hear some Brazilian songs from the album that FRANK recorded a few years before with ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIN, so ENRICO first songs where romantic bossanovas. ENRICO always like all FRANK’S album, but that one in duet with ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIN (the most famous Brazilian song writer) was absolutely his favorite. Why??...because you hear and felt the most pure SINATRA who was not trying to make a show for the people, but enjoying himself, fully relaxed seeing through those beautiful songs all his
life. ''GINGI'' is a good example. It represents the dreamy woman that everybody wants to have and hold. When it is time for her to go away, like the song says, ''I’LL LET YOU GO AWAY IF YOU TAKE ME WITH YOU.'' The album that they made together entitled, ''FRANCIS ALBERT SINATRA and ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIN” represents the peak of JOBIN’S career and the highlighted soul of one of SINATRA'S never heard before.

Back to MAMMA GINA lounge. The guests where at the end of the first course and ENRICO was singing ''THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA'' when FRANK turned to him and says, ''BRAVO ENRICO!!!BRAVO!!!'' ENRICO COULD NOT believe that an artist of that caliber had compliment his singing, but then he remembers what the owner of MAMMA GINA told him that FRANK is this way: he likes you or he doesn’t. At the end of the dinner ENRICO sang another JOBIN song my favorite ''GINGI ''and again FRANK turn to him and said, ''BRAVO ENRICO!!!!.....BRAVO!!!'';at that moment ENRICO realized that ''GINGI''' was one of FRANK'S favorite songs too. ENRICO was getting tired, because he had been singing for 3 hours nonstop; but, he was very happy because FRANK was one of his favorite artists. While ENRICO was drinking a coke and trying to relax, one of the waiters came to him and said, “Mr. SINATRA has invited you to sit at the table with him.” So ENRICO did and sat between Mr. SINATRA and his wife BARBARA. For about 20 minutes they talked about his latest interview on a ''LARRY KING SHOW.'' ENRICO wanted to get a picture with him, but it was not possible; so ENRICO’S gave FRANK his album ''internationally yours'' and asked him if it was possible to have it signed, He said: “Sure ENRICO!!” So he gave him his red pen and just before leaving he signed his beautiful, famous name: ''FRANK SINATRA.''
Frank Sinatra Autographs Enricos Album

MAMMA GINA Italian restaurant [1988] close for summer vacations and ENRICO back in San Diego received a call from TOMMASO ITALIAN RESTAURANT, a new restaurant located exactly across from the famous PORTOFINO, where ENRICO used to play. TOMMASO'S was very successful; a lot of people remember ENRICO from PORTOFINO and came over to say hello to him. The owner TOMMASO MAGGIORE, a good looking Italian native, became a good friend of ENRICO and offered him the opening of another new restaurant, ''WHEN IN NAPLE'' in PHOENIX, ARIZONA. In total ENRICO work for TOMMASO for almost 3 years and he said that TOMMASO was one of the few real professional restaurateur. An opportunity came for ENRICO to open his own Italian restaurant and on the night of the NEW YEAR, 1991, the restaurant ROMA MIA opened the doors to the public. The first 6 months where terrific; every single night there was a line, but then they started opening new gourmet restaurants all around. The business went down. Being the only owner of the restaurant, ENRICO, in order to survive, did everything possible and every possible kind of work in the restaurant--from cooking to serving, from hosting to singing, and in case of emergency even washing the dishes. For a little while business seemed to be going better, but then with the terrorist attack of 9/11, it was impossible to make a come back. So, after thirteen years, ENRICO, in 2003, closed the doors of ROMA MIA, losing all his life savings, his condo in Florida, and 5 beautiful acres of land in Las Vegas. ENRICO said that that was really the worst time of his life.
